Education News: Unpacking the Surge in UK School Absences — Can Homeschooling Help?

August 6, 2024 by Minerva Tutors,

In a report by The Guardian back in March 2024, it was revealed that school absences in England had reached record levels, with 25.1% of secondary school pupils classified as persistently absent since the Autumn term of 2023.

This surge in absences has continued through to the summer of 2024, presenting a growing concern for educators and parents alike. Our Education News blog explores the underlying causes of this trend, the impact on student mental health, and whether homeschooling could offer a viable solution.

The Recent Surge in School Absences

Between March and August 2024, the trend of rising absences has shown no sign of abating. Data from the Department for Education indicates that the overall absence rate for the week commencing 8 July 2024 was 8.1%, with persistent absences hovering around 21.8% during the spring term. Notably, illness accounted for a significant portion of these absences, reflecting a post-pandemic pattern where health concerns remain a dominant factor.

The Link Between Absences and Mental Health

The increase in school absences is closely tied to the rising mental health issues among young people in the UK.

Studies have shown that children with mental health problems are significantly more likely to miss school. For instance, NHS Digital reported that children with mental health issues were seven times more likely to have missed 15 days of school in the Autumn term of 2022 compared to their peers without such issues.

The stress of academic pressures, social anxiety, and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic contribute to these mental health challenges, exacerbating the issue of persistent school absences.

State vs Private Schools: A Comparative Look

The issue of school absences varies between state and private schools. Generally, state schools have higher absence rates compared to their private counterparts. Data from the spring term of 2024 indicates that the overall absence rate in state-funded secondary schools was 8.1%, compared to lower rates typically observed in private schools.

This disparity is often attributed to the smaller class sizes, more personalised attention, and additional resources available in private schools, which can better support students’ needs and mitigate factors that contribute to absenteeism.

The Rise of Homeschooling in the UK

In response to these challenges, homeschooling has seen a marked increase across the UK. Many parents are turning to homeschooling as a way to provide a tailored educational experience that can better accommodate their children’s needs. Homeschooling offers the flexibility to address individual learning paces, health concerns, and emotional well-being more effectively than traditional schooling environments.

Can Homeschooling Address School Absences?

Homeschooling presents a potential solution to the problem of rising school absences. By removing the pressures of a traditional classroom setting, homeschooling can create a more conducive learning environment for children struggling with mental health issues or chronic illnesses. Additionally, homeschooling allows for a customised curriculum that can engage students more effectively and foster a love for learning that might be stifled in conventional schools.

Research has shown that homeschooled children often achieve higher academic outcomes and exhibit lower levels of anxiety and stress compared to their peers in traditional schools. Moreover, the flexibility of homeschooling can help maintain educational continuity during periods of illness or personal challenges, reducing the likelihood of persistent absences.

The surge in school absences in the UK is a multifaceted issue driven by health concerns, mental health challenges, and systemic disparities between state and private schools.

Homeschooling offers a promising alternative that can address some of these underlying problems, providing a flexible and supportive educational environment. As more families consider this option, it will be crucial to continue evaluating the long-term impacts of homeschooling on student outcomes and well-being.
